POPULAR FICTION LISTS
Created by the members of the Adult Reading Round Table Steering Committee, the ARRT Popular Fiction List and the Young Adult Genre Fiction List, are designed to help library staff evaluate their knowledge of popular fiction for adults and young adults. Both lists can be used to help structure a discussion group or reading plan within an individual library or library system. The 3rd edition of the Adult Popular Fiction List (formerly named the Adult Genre Fiction List) was published in the Fall of 2007.
The bibliography IS designed to help library staff evaluate their knowledge of popular fiction for adults.
Four levels of "familiarity" were established:
I have read this author
I have read about this author
I have heard of this author
I have never heard of this author
The list was first updated in 2002 to reflect the latest trends in popular reading.
In 2007, the list was revised again, including more areas of popular interest and broadening its scopes to "popular fiction" from "genre fiction."
The list is divided into 14 categories. Only those authors the committee considered most important, popular, and currently writing were included. Librarians are encouraged to add authors of local interest to the list.
